Terms of Use
What this publication is for, what you may do with it, what it does not promise, and which questions it deliberately leaves open.
Last updated October 16, 2026
By reading Stone & Crumb you accept the terms below. They are written to be short enough to actually read.
Purpose of the content
Articles here are reference and educational writing about bread traditions, grains, equipment, and process. They are not instructions to be followed without judgement, and they are not professional advice of any kind, including food safety, medical, nutritional, legal, or commercial advice.
Baking involves hot ovens, sharp tools, live fermentation, and flour dust. Conditions in your kitchen, the state of your equipment, and the ingredients available to you are not known here. Decisions about what is safe to do remain yours, and where a matter has genuine consequences you should consult a source qualified for your situation.
Descriptions of legal instruments, protected designations, and national standards are summaries written for general readers. They are not legal advice and must not be relied on for compliance. Anyone with a regulatory obligation should read the instrument itself, in force at the relevant date, in the relevant jurisdiction.
Accuracy and revision
Considerable effort goes into checking figures against their sources, and the Editorial Standards page describes how. Even so, sources are updated, standards are amended, pages move, and errors survive review. Content is provided as it stands, without warranty that it is complete, current, or free of error.
Articles may be revised. When a substantive revision happens, the updated date on the article changes. Nothing here is guaranteed to remain available at the same address indefinitely.
Rights in the articles
The article text on this site is original writing and remains the property of the publication.
You may read it, print it for your own use, quote a short passage with attribution and a link, and link to any page freely. Deep links are welcome and no permission is needed to link.
You may not republish whole articles or substantial parts of them, mirror the site, sell the content, or feed it into a product that reproduces it as if it were that product's own material. Requests for anything beyond short quotation should go through the Contact page.
Cover images
Cover photographs come from external collections under public-domain, CC0, or other terms that allow free use without mandatory attribution. The publication does not claim exclusive ownership of those photographs. The restrictions on republishing article text do not replace a photograph's own source terms. A related photo does not, by itself, document the research or historical events discussed in an article.
Cited sources and external links
Every article lists the sources behind it, with links. Those sources belong to their own publishers, hold their own rights, and are governed by their own terms. A citation here is not an endorsement, a partnership, or a claim of any relationship with the cited organisation.
External links are provided because a reader should be able to check the evidence. Once you follow one, this publication has no control over that site's content, availability, or practices, and accepts no responsibility for them.
Acceptable use
Do not attempt to interfere with the site or the service that hosts it, do not attempt to gain access to anything not published here, and do not use automated retrieval in a way that degrades availability for other readers. Do not use this site's name or content to imply endorsement of a product, business, or claim.
Automated collection of the article text for the purpose of republication or resale is not permitted. Ordinary crawling for search indexing is fine, and the site's robots file states what is allowed.
Limits of liability
The content is offered in good faith and used at your own risk. To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, this publication is not liable for loss or damage arising from use of, or reliance on, anything published here, including any outcome of following a method described in an article.
Advertising and commercial content
The site may use advertising, affiliate links, sponsored articles, or paid placements to support publication. Any commercial relationship affecting an article will be clearly disclosed in that article rather than only in a general notice, and commercial support does not determine factual conclusions or editorial judgment.
The Privacy Policy explains the advertising technology and reader choices that may apply. The Editorial Standards page states the same commitment to clear disclosure and independent editorial work.
Governing law
These terms deliberately do not name a governing law or a forum for disputes. Doing so would require asserting a jurisdiction for the publisher, and no such jurisdiction is stated anywhere on this site. Naming one that had not been established would be worse than leaving it open.
Two consequences follow. Mandatory consumer protection law in your own country of residence applies to you regardless of what any website's terms say, and nothing here purports to remove rights you hold under it. And before this site is operated as a commercial undertaking, the publisher should state the governing jurisdiction in this section.
Severability and entire agreement
If any provision of these terms is found unenforceable, that provision is limited or removed to the minimum extent necessary and the remainder continues to apply.
These terms, together with the Privacy Policy, are the entire agreement between you and this publication concerning use of the site. They replace any earlier version of this page.
Failure to enforce a provision on one occasion is not a waiver of the right to enforce it later.
Withdrawal of access
Access to a freely published website is not a contractual entitlement. The publisher may restrict access to anyone who interferes with the site, attempts unauthorised access, or uses automated retrieval in a way that degrades availability for other readers, and may do so without notice.
The site may also be taken offline, moved, or discontinued. Nothing here promises perpetual availability at any particular address.
Changes to these terms
These terms may change. The current version is always the one on this page, with its updated date at the top. Continuing to use the site after a change means accepting the revised terms.
Contact
Questions about these terms, permission requests, and correction reports all go to the editorial desk through the Contact page.
